trinadad or valederos ?

hi

after 3 nights havana in feb 2012 , we have booked 11 nights at sol sarenos coral hotel, valederos (generally good tripadvisor reviews for this hotel. )

.however we realised later that valedaros is probably too commercialised for us (2 middle aged women ).

we can change to brisas trinidad del mar, trinidad but the tripadvisor reviews are generally not at all good for this hotel.

1. should we stay at valederos but visit trinadad for a few nights by hire car or bus (we like to explore ) .

or

2.risk the hotel in trinadad and stay there ? if so, anywhere to explore around there ?

many thanks

Hi prospects,

We went to Varadero once, for our first trip to Cuba. We had fun, but wouldn't go back again. Its basically one large tourist enclave, and just not our cup of tea. If what you want are beautiful long sandy beaches, hotels, and no connection with real Cuba then its the place to be. If you want to get out and explore and see real life then a smaller tourist area like Trinidad is preferable, I think. Our past 6 trips to Cuba have been to areas like Santiago, St Lucia, and Manzanillo. We haven't been to Trinidad yet, but we are heading there with a few friends in mid January. From what we've researched it is a very culturally rich town, and even has a steam train ride close by. One other point is that Trinidad, being on the south side of Cuba, is less likely to have cool weather that Varadero.

If you're really picky about your all-inclusive resort accommodation then in my opinion nothing in Trinidad is even close to being acceptable. Trinidad has some of the best casa particulars, restaurants, live music and fabulous local vibe that you can find anywhere in Cuba (and still be in a fairly touristy location)... but it does not have great all inclusive resort facilities.

If the resort itself isn't all that important to you then no big deal... the beach is nice and the town is a short taxi ride away and offers really great nightlife in a completely safe and relaxed atmosphere.

Cheers,

Terry
