getting around in Picton/Marlborough

We planning to take the ferry from Wellington to Picton and then stay for a couple of days before leaving from Blenheim to go to Melbourne. Will we be able to get around without a car, either by water taxi or some other form of transportation? We have booked a B&B in Picton and want to do some wine tasting in Marlborough, then will have to get from Picton to the airport in Blenheim on our last day.

Picton has water taxis, and day cruises - I've enjoyed a wonderful eco cruise with the Cougar Line. Picton itself is easy to get around walking, being compact and picturesque.

For your Blenheim airport departure, Intercity runs a coach service from Picton to Blenheim, there is also the train service. Depending on the time of day for your flight, have a look at an airport shuttle service. This one also offers winery tours - http://www.marlboroughsoundsshuttles.co.nz/

Be aware that the passenger train service is limited to one trip in and out of Picton to Blenheim per day therefore you will need to book a shuttle such as the Marlborough Sounds Shuttles as in the link above.

Picton is very small and you really need to get out of the town to see things. We arrived by cruise ship but the tours arranged by the cruise ships are expensive and often take up all the time you have available.

There are some walking trails accessible from the town but our time was quite limited and we wanted to see some of the key sights. We were able to arrange a short tour at very short notice (i.e. we just walked in) with Taiaha Tours, 68 High St. Picton. They are quite flexible and the cost is very reasonable.
