It's certainly possible to travel from Picton to Mt Cook but it's 672km and would take nearly ten hours. The most direct route would be via highway 1 through Blenheim, Christchurch and Ashburton and then via highways 79, 8 and 80 through Geraldine, Lake Tekapo and beside Lake Pukaki to Mt Cook.

Can I safely assume you are not intending to do this in one go? As previously noted it is a long drive and driving times in NZ are a lot slower than most realise. You can bet on an average speed of about 70-80km/h so on this trip you are looking at a minimum of 9-10 hours non stop driving.

Take a break mid way in either Christchurch or further inland at say Methven.

The inland scenic route, highway 72, has less traffic and is more scenic so be sure to take that for part of the drive.
