getting from Nida to St. Petersburg?

We will be staying 3 or 4 nights in September on the Curonian Spit, in Nida.

The original plan was to then get a flight from Palanga via Riga to St. Petersburg, on Air Baltic. Russian entry visa would be issued for entering Russia at St. Petersburg.

Now I am wondering: Can one get a bus, or a small plane from Nida going south on the spit and crossing the Russian border there on the spit and then fly from Kaliningrad to St. Petersburg? That flight seems to be so much shorter and faster than flying from Palanga. Is that border crossing possible? How long would it take to get across it for an American citizen?

Border crossing is possible and easy-peasy, unless there are some special regulations specifically for americans, but you must have a visa. Visa won't be issued on the border.

There is one bus to Kaliningrad daily in the morning, 3 to 4 hours travel time, price about 25 litas. You can check prices for certai ndays and buy tickets online here: http://www.autobusubilietai.lt
