Group of Irish girls travelling to Riga

Hi, We are a group of Irish girls travelling to Riga in February. Is it safe for girls? Read a lot about crime against men but what about women?

Riga is as safe for girls as is Dublin. Even more. Latvian men are very shy, you will be spokend 10 times by an italian a non time at all by a latvian. Dont walk alone in the night in bad neighbouhoods. Stick to the city center and you will be all right. Places as London or Barcelona are a lot scarier. Believe me :)

Been there last August, heading again next week. You will be perfectly safe in city centre, it's very Western and upmarket, but as with any city in Europe, just keep your wits about you. Outside the city centre is what you need to be concerned about - it's quite poverty stricken, but you'll have n reason to be there so not too worry. You'll have a blast.

just got back from there. On the whole I would say its safer than London. Dont walk around drunk on your own (which I hope you wouldnt do in London or Dublin) and you'll be fine.

There are a few strip clubs/brothels etc but its a lot less upfront than Amsterdam for instance and the staff outside are just interested in getting blokes in there obviously, so unless you are overly offended by them they shouldn't be a problem.

Enjoy the great bars like Cafe Cuba and Orange Bar as well as the British and Irish theme pubs (which to be fair are well visited by Latvians as well as tourists)

Be sure to have a look at the Art Nouveau buildings on Elizabetes Ieta and Alberta ieta. Its only a 10 minute walk from the centre and they are covered in detailed stonework.

Have a good one...

Typical mistake by foreign tourists. In Riga the Old Town is not a center, the city center is the part of the city outside the old town, boulevards, parks, area arou central station. That is weher the real city life goes on - shopping, working, enterntaining, traffic, people. So Alberta and Elizabeth streets are in the city center but yes old town is 10 min walk from there.
