Like many places, it rather depends upon how "brave" you are and how much effort you want to make. In Riga Old Town you will find that prices reflect how 'tourist friendly' a place is - if there is a sign outside in English, expect to pay a bit more. Having said that, you'll still pay less than in the UK.

We were there this weekend and can recommend, for either price or quality

1) Double Coffee - a chain - tourist friendly but they do loads more than coffee - large menu and some excellent alcoholic coffees - reasonable prices.

2) Central Riga - this is across the Canal from Old Riga and there are some excellent restaurants that are worth the 10 minutes walk. We went to Spotikacs on Antoninas (check spelling - it's in the area of famous Art Nouveau buildings not far from the National Theatre) and had a superb meal with starters, main course a bottle of wine and a couple of large vodkas for under £20 for the two of us.

3) Central Market - this is much less touristy. It's just over the railway line from Old Riga (behind the big cinema), housed in some old zeppelin hangars. Really worth a look. We went in a restaurant (Latvian/Armenian) in the cellar of one of the hangars. Not that easy to find, but it is below a furniture shop and can be seen from the entrance. Not tourist friendly, although the bloke serving had a little English and Julie has some Russian - but the food is on display so you can point. Two big bowls of soup, (really hearty, home made soup) and big plates of salad, a half litre of beer and a bottle of mineral water for £2.90 (honest). Great place for lunch and there are other places to eat around the market.

4) Katrinas bar - out of the centre, on Katrinas Ambis, near Hotel Caravella (where we were staying) - 2 x 100ml Moskovskaya vodkas - that's the equivalent of 2 quadruple vodkas in English measures - £1:30. There are probably dozens of places like this a couple of kms out.

Hope this helps a bit. Have fun and wrap up warm.
