5 nights in tallinn summer

Hi

we have 5 nights in Tallinn for my birthday this summer. End of May. We have arranged a day trip to helsinki and am aware of all the wonderful sights to see but are there any off the wall sights or really cool things to do?

We also love to eat traditional and do oldy worldy stuff too and drink vodka!

What is best way to get transport from airport we are staying at St Olav

Many thanks

I´ll try to answer your questions.

To get from the airport to the city center you may either take a taxi or a bus. Bus nr 2 goes to the city center, best stop to choose is Laikmaa. However, it´s still at least 10 (or even 15) minutes walking to the old town. So your best bet with all the luggage might be taking a taxi. There are 3 companies waiting at the airport - however, these are the most expensive ones. I´m not sure how much the trip will be (depends on the time of travel as well since there huge traffic jams occur due to the road construction works). I suppose taking a taxi directly from the line may cost up to 15 eur to the old town. You may also order a taxi via phone and then a good reliable taxi will cost about 6 eur. If you need any further information on that, let me know.

Secondly, I´d suggest you take a boat trip to Naissaar. It´s a pretty island and really nice to hang around, weather permitting. It´s more about nature, but there´s also an old (and of course abandoned) Soviet military base (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naissaar . More pictures in Estonian version). You can get there by ship every Saturday and Sunday (schedule: http://monica.ee/soidugraafik-naissaarele). Naissaar is one of the prettiest areas around Tallinn and by the end on May it should be warm enough already. Perfect day trip.

New Lennusadam is truly nice (http://www.lennusadam.eu/en/), highly recommended.

Drinking vodka is possible in every pub or restaurant. However, drinking whatever alcohol in public places is strictly forbidden and the ban is actually enforced. One of the spookiest bars I´ve visited in Tallinn lately is definitely the Hullumaja bar (https://www.facebook.com/HullumajaBaar) (literally Hullumaja = nuthouse).

I´m not a fan of Helsinki, for me it´s quite boring city. But it´s up to you. I suggest you to make a 1-day trip (if by car) or 2-days (if by public transport) to Eastern Estonia if you like something completely different. Southern Estonia is truly lovely as well.

In Tallinn itself, most of the great places are in the old town. Bastion tunnels (passages) are very interesting. Try to visit: http://linnamuuseum.ee/kok/en/info-2/

If you specify you interests, I might be able give some more advice.

I would disagree with the best option being a taxi. It does of course depend on how much luggage you have, but the walk from the bus to your hotel would be almost all Old Town. From where you get off the bus, it is less than a 5 minute walk to the Viru Gates (entrance to Old Town). There won't be heavy traffic either, not compared to large cities anyway.
