Only in Budapest. This is a frequent question and there are many posts on this. Do a search and run through the many posts and when you have done that come back with any remaining specific questions which I'm sure someone will be able to answer for you.

Virtually all the exchange bureau have their rates posted outside so you can check/calculate before committing. The only name that keeps cropping up as a place to avoid is Western Union/Interchange. Also everyone advises not to change money at the airport as the rates there are reputedly poor. If you are going to get a taxi into town you can pay by credit card or if you want some forints before you get into town use an ATM at the airport. Of course if you are arriving late at night or on a Sunday you might want to buy a few forints (£50 or so) before you leave home to see you over until the bureau open the next day.

Any forints you have left at the end can be used as partial payment in the 'duty free' so you are 'forint free' when you get back home. Budapest is a great city so enjoy.

... and if you do change a small amount at home, do it at the post office or the bank, NOT an airport exchange desk - and that goes for all currencies anywhere in the world. I despair when I see new arrivals make a beeline to those offices, as they might as well be chucking their money away.

Would you say that there is a trend to give worse rates when the exchange office , belonging to the same company, is located in a posh area e.g. 5 star hotel?
