Where to go in between Budapest and Venice?

Hello,

My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Central Europe in August and are working on a route starting in Prague and ending in Venice over a 2 week period. We want to stay in Prague for a few days then plan on going to Krakow and then to Budapest. Any suggestions on where to go from Budapest before ending in Venice? We've heard that Dubruvnik is great but it's quite far and out of the way. Any ideas? Thanks!

Maybe you could stop at Lake Balaton for some days if you like that kind of holiday - not only walking in cities, but swimming and laying on the sun.

The train from Budapest to Venice stops at many cities beside the lake: Siófok, Balatonföldvár, Balatonlelle and Fonyód so you could travel directly from there to Venezia with the EN afterwards.

Or, if you prefer cities, you could stop in Ljubljana. It's a cute town, and Lake Bled is not too far from there. It's a great place to do some hiking, but Balaton would probably be better for swimming, it is warmer than Lake Bled.
