I would suggest Széchenyi, if you only have time to visit one bath. It has both outdoor and indoor pools, and a big part of it is really nicely renovated. Of course you will have to be reasonably careful with your valuables, and yes, some indoor pools are not yet renovated and look worn. But you will experience this in Budapest often: the new and the worn elegance next to each other. Try to avoid the crowds in Szechenyi, go on a weekday, if possible.

Nice meals are easy to find. Some ideas:

http://www.csalogany26.hu/ is very nice in Buda

Segal is a very trendy fusion restaurant, with excellent food http://web.axelero.hu/vsegal/

and if you want great Hungarian food, try Rosenstein. http://www.rosenstein.hu/en/index.html

It's fantastic!! It's hidden in a small street near Keleti railway station, not a nice location, but it's absolutely worth going there.

I also suggest Szecheyni. It is restored in parts and there are newer and older rooms. But the outdoor baths are really terrific.

Restaurants I really enjoyed were Cafe Kor (make reservations and its cash only) and M Restaurant.

Didn't find much in the way of good shopping. There is the Market Hall where lots of touristy goods are sold along with food stuff. I didn't find the prices to be very cheap overall. But I did find a nice store for small, arty pottery over by the Opera House.
