Budapest to Kracow

We will be in Budapest over the Christmas holiday and would like to travel to Kracow. Needing information on the most efficient way of getting there. Can anyone recommend a tour company or the process of going about this. Thanks!

1. Re: Budapest to Kracow

Traveled in summer, a couple of years ago the trains through Slovakia to Poland were not a good option, a long trip. Booked rental car from US and drove, up from Budapest on east side of Danube on E77 and through Slovakia on most direct route north to Kracow. Fast, one lane ea way, picturesque but in winter? Loved Kracow, compact, walkable, trams, cheap but good food. Returned by way of Auschwitz. didn't want to spend the money for for road pass (good for a couple of weeks or big fine) for just go thru Austria) took local roads into Czech Repub & Slovakia to Bratislava south across into Hungary to the M1 to Budapest, wow! Instead, if drive can take M1 from Budapest thru Vienna to connect thru Czech Republic to Poland's A4 that goes east to Kracow - good roads, longer distance. So, better a tour bus (if any) or train to Vienna (about 3 hours) and then Kakow. Perhaps Kracow too far, w/o lots of time. Go Prague in same or less time! Instead, do Vienna, get weekend roundtrip tkt from MAV RR office on Andrassy ut - includes Vienna metro free! Or drive Vienna by way of Fertod, visiting the Esterhazy Palace & stay in Sopron ( a day or two) & short drive to Viennn. Or short train trips to Kecskemet or Pecs or further to Szeged, or a day by the suburban RR rtes to Szentendre or the "palace" at Godollo. Get maps and tour books around Vaci ut. & don't miss the info from the Tourinform offices re Hungarian cities, sites, events. Have fun but limit travel time.
