Railwaystation is not far from centre ! 5 min walk!
As the Eagle said, you can buy tickets at the train station beforehand. As you walk in the front door there is a ticket office on the left and an aisle for international tickets.
On the platform, you usually have to turn right and walk right to the end and down into the underpass before turning left and finding your platform.

Thanks for the replies. Do you happen to know if it is possible to pre-purchase these tickets online, or is it best just to buy them at the station? It's just that I don't want to turn up and find out that it is sold out...
You can purchase it from an authorized travel agency. But most simply at the rw station a day earlier or just before!
Our trains are never sold out!
Do you save money by buying in advance?
Actually purchase of the ticket in advance online allows to save some money. Although since Slovenian Railways doesn't offer purchase of tickets on their website, you'll need to do a small totally legal trick. General idea is to visit Austrian Railways website (OeBB) and purchase there discounted ticket Villach-Salzburg (from 9 euro), while when already in Ljubljana just buy an additional ticket Ljubljana-Villach for the same train (standard fare is 21,2 euro). Basically you'll have one journey but two tickets. Standard one-way fare ticket Ljubljana-Salzburg is 49 euro, so a trick with "ticket break" via Villach allows passenger to save almost 20 euro out of nothing
Thanks so much for the tip on buying two train tickets - saved us a packet!
