1.5-2 days in Ljubjlana - suggestions?

I have between 1.5 and 2 days to spend in Ljubljana this month and am looking for suggestions. I've checked out the 35 attractions listed on this site but only one of them has been reviewed!

I was considereing visiting the castle, but the reviewer suggested the castle is worthwhile for the view only, but not much else. Is this the general consensus?

There seems to be a large number of museums as well as local squares/neighbourhoods listed in the attractions. Any must sees?

Otherwise, I'm open to other ideas.

hello...

well as a local i think i could b a little help here :)...

Ljubljana as u might have read is a very old city and it has a bit of history to show on every step...if u just know where to look...

for example u have a roman statue in the middle of Ljubljana that not even a lot of locals know about...as far as the castle goes...yes...the view in my opinion is great...but the city council is making plans to make the castle an even bigger attraction...they have recently bought a egg shaped thingy to transport ppl on the top of the hill... :) there r a few galerys in the castle and a caffee....

it all dependes on what u want to see and what ur interested in...it is also true that we have a lot of museums...worth seeing..well its not the Louvre...but we still r proud of them...the architecture spans from roman to baroque to modern...

i used to think my city was not that special and has nothing to offer...but it was after seeing a lot of other european citys that i realised that we 2 r special and like no other...

if ur a gambler we have a few casinos as well...a big cinema center with 12 big screan rooms...a bowling arena...an area that we call BTC - it is a large area with nothing but shoping centers...anything u need u get it there...in that area u also have "aqua city" indoor pools, sauna,fitness...

in the center u can also find a few really good restaurants...from italian, mexican, thai, chinese food...to our local specialitis

i could go on and on...but then u'll loose interest :)

its not the party center of the world...but its still a nice city worth a visit...i hope u'll find something 4 urself here and that ur stay will b a memorable one even if it is for a 1.5-2 days :)

Hi,

We were in Ljubljana this summer & loved it. It's a small compact city with one of the prettiest centres that we've ever visited. It has such a lovely relaxed atmosphere.

The view from the castle is great but other than that it's quite small & I'm guessing not the most historically correct.

We're not really museum types so can't comment on any of those. We just walked around taking in the history, the beauty & the atmosphere. There's a nice market along the Triple Bridge for buying your souvenirs. We had 1.5 days in the city as well & thought it was plenty of time.

If you have 2 full days then I'd recommend taking one day to have a good explore of the city & one day to do a day trip like visiting Postojna caves or Lipica stud or Lake Bled or.....the list goes on. All these places are accessible by train or bus from Ljubljana.

Also you'll find prices in Ljubljana very reasonable compared to the UK. €2 for a bottle of Heineken, around €10 for lunch, we had a meal at a pizza place along the river one night & only cost us €18 or €19 including wine.

Enjoy, Shelly.

The castle is just the view, yes, but WHAT a view....the Alps looking majestic in the distance. And the climb to the Castle is a heart-pumpingly enjoyable trek - don't get the tourist train....

You can easily explore most of Ljubljana in a day. It's like Amsterdam giving birth to a baby Prague. Wonderfully petite.

There are some fantastic restaurants, serving some gut-bustingly delicious stodge - check out Harambasa, which is so cheap, homely and scrumptious that you'll eat your own body weight in veal.

Lake Bled is easily visited in a day, too. Catch the bus - about 80 minutes - take a dazzling stroll around the lake.....then huff and puff your way up to the castle.

In addition to the other advice, I'd recomend hiring a bike from the tourist information centre by the market. It is very cheap (I think around one euro for two hours) and in 20 minutes you can be right out in the countryside.

Ljubljana is full of cyclists and very well set up with cycle lanes almost everywhere - you can actually just follow the cycle lanes and see where they take you. Even when you end up on a road with no dedicated cycle lane, you will find drivers very considerate around you (and I speak as a rather nervous and wobbly cyclist) - presumably because there are so many cyclists around that all the drivers cycle sometimes too. There are some very , very hilly bits of the city, but also flat areas so that even someone as unfit as me can find plenty of comfortable level routes around town and surrounding countryside.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Just back from Ljubljana and had a super time.

We walked around a lot and took in the atmosphere. I found LJ to be a very hip/party town. Lots of cafes, bars/pubs and discos.

We walked up to the castle and enjoyed the view. Would definitely recommend! Being a history buff I also visited the old town wall, said to have been built by the Romans from 14-15AD. Interesting to see and easy to walk to.

Overall a pleasant visit, although prices weren't as cheap as I was expecting....
