Driving across borders

Is it safe and/or advisable to drive from Vienna to Slovenia and Croatia? Would it be cheaper to do that, or to just take a train from Vienna to Ljubljana? Will they let us cross the borders of these countries in a rental car? Thanks in advance for your help.

If you can cross the border in a rental car depends entirely on the rental company. Some may not allow it, some may require extra insurance, etc. So you need to clear that with them.

There is no border check between Austria and Slovenia. You just drive trough. There is one between Slovenia and Croatia.

As far as safety goes. I wouldn't worry about it. You should be fine in all 3 countries. But if you'll be driving on motorways in Slovenia, make sure you have the toll sticker on the windshield and that you set it up BEFORE entering the motorway. Depending on your route, you might be on the motorway the moment you cross the border, so get the sticker in Austria, otherwise you can get slapped with a fine for those 200m you'll be using the motorway to get to the first petrol station on Slovenian side to get the sticker.
