First visit - a couple of questions

We finally decided on a hotel and booked the Grandezza. More than we expected to pay but we are only there 2 nights - March 22 and 23.

Would like some suggestions on places to eat. Prefer local food, inexpensive to moderate. Places locals like to eat. Close to or in the center. We are planning to try the Pegas.

Are there any cultural events going on then ? Opera, Concert ? If opera, would need english subtittles.

Thank you

You can't really go wrong with food in Brno as the vast majority of establishments are interested in their clientele returning, unlike in many places in central Prague where they know that there will be a constant stream of 'victims' - but that it the same in any tourist trap.

The only place I can think of off-hand that I might avoid around central Brno is maybe Špaliček on Zelný trh - not great food and you come out smelling of fried oil for days afterwards. There used to be a place called Parlament on Masarykova where the chips were always swimming in grease - a pity because it was a nice location but it's closed now, probably because of the awful food :)

For something a bit quirky you could try Vytopna on Hlínky http://brno-en.vytopna.cz/ - meals and drinks are served to your seat by a model train. This was uníque when it opened and has now opened also in Prague.

A couple more ideas here guardian.co.uk/travel/2010/jun/19/low-cost-f…

And yes - you need several days, or preferably even weeks or years, and you will never want to go back home :) There are lots of us who caught the bug!

Thanks. Restaurace Pod Spilberkem looks like a good choice.
