Suggest a Brewery or Brewpub please?

Visiting to see Frank Turner on 9th March and on the 10th it's my mates 31st birthday and as lovers of good beer the 4 of us are looking for a day out to celebrate so I am thinking of spending a day somewhere that may be able to give us a guided tour before settling down to something good to eat and a good few beers.

Don't mind if it's outside of the City, train journey would be fun.

Any ideas if this is possible anywhere? If we cannot get a tour then I am sure a good feed and a good few beers would suffice but a b reak from the usual places we frequent in the city centre would be a nice change for us all!

Pilsner Urquell brewery in Plzen shuold be ideal for you, about 1 hour 40 mintes by train from prague, the brewery is an easy walk from the train station. There is a good place to eat and of course drink in the brewery

For brew pubs have a look at this recent Trip report

tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g274707-i96-k700…

Berounsky Medved is an easy trip to make as is Uniticky which serves quite possibly the best Pilsner style beer I have ever tasted ,food there is great too.

if you need further info just ask.

traditional, modern?

do you know your hotel location yet? I'd start there

try to get away from the main tourist drag......if you see pretzels on the table, a good hint is that is a tourist establishment....you might go elsewhere. At the least, don't eat the pretzels cause they ain't free. .

at some point, you can visit The Pub. Several locations. A tap at every table. Digital menu and jukebox..self-ordering. Each person can keep track of their own amount/ spending. As well, it keeps track of your table's consumption ...video screens keeps record and allows you to compete against other customers at other locations in Prague and in Czech Rep.

a nice little guide

pragueexperience.com/bars_pubs/bars_pubs.asp

you can quickly glance based on the national flags of what kind of bar you're interested in...i.e. Irish,Czech etc.

U medvidku has its own micro brewery in the newer part, just go through the back and up the stairs, you can sit right beside the brewing kettles and drink beer that has been brewed and never left that room.It is also a decent pub for a meal ,wide choice of czech specialities and they do Budvar from the tank that is quite superb.U Tri Ruzi that i mention in my report is but 2 or 3 minutes walk away.

Unetice is not really some kind of majestic day trip, more a lunch trip. Unetice village is quite small and, dare I say, uninteresting. I'm pretty sure that the brewery tours there are in Czech only too, though the beer and food last week was great.

For a full beery day out you can't really beat Plzen. Whilst the brewery is Pilsner and Gambrinus only there are plenty of other pubs around in town that can slake your desire for unusual and interesting beers after you've had the best the brewery has to offer (which is pretty fabulous anyway IMO).

Another good lunch trip would be to Beroun, about 20-30 minutes from Prague. The brewery there is only five minutes walk from the railway station and the beer is very good and very cheap and the food very czech.

I've not done exactly this myself but for another reasonably full day out you could kill two birds with one stone and go to Benesov by train from Prague, have a look round the Ferdinand brewery (http://www.pivovarferdinand.cz, looks like they will do English tours for a fee), then walk to Konopiste (http://www.zamek-konopiste.cz), have a look round there at the beautiful scenery (esp the pond) and then have some delicious (assuming you like freshly dead things) lunch/dinner at the hunting lodge behind it (http://www.staramyslivna.com). That'd all certainly be less touristy than Plzen but that may not bother you too much... :)

Thanks everyone.

Redpola......the Ferdinand, does it have a pub attached to it to retire to after a tour or would we need to head on into town?

A wee train trip sounds like a plan!

I was in Benesov a few years back and did not find a pub attached the the Brewery, there is a small shop selling beer and glasses and hats but no bar, there are however a few places in town selling Ferdinand Beer but quite honestly there were more selling Pilsner Urquell, things may have changed though.

tha walk from the train station to the brewery is less than 10 minutes but I do believe their is now a tourist land train.
