Travel between Malta and Lampedusa

Can anyone tell me if there is ferry service between the islands of Malta and Lampedusa? Looking to visit both islands this upcoming May or June and wanted to desperately know if there was ferry service between the two islands and how often such service runs? Planning a trip for the sole purpose of seeing Lampedusa but think it would be a complete waste and disappointment not to see Malta as well, especially since the islands are so close to each other! Also, does anyone recommend any particular area in Sicily that one must definetly see? Looking to possibly spend one day/night in sicily as well, but torn on where exactly to stay that would offer the best experience and the most to see. Thanks so much!!!!

Welcome to Sicily jbourdain!

I don’t think there is any ferry service between Lampedusa and Malta.

Have you considered flying?

Consider using Palermo as your base in Sicily since Meridiana flies from Palermo to Lampedusa and Air Malta flies from Palermo to Malta.

I live in Malta and I'm sorry to confirm that there is no ferry service from Malta to Lampedusa. I would agree with Vagabonda that probably the best option is to fly via Palermo, if you can justify the hassle and expense.

You can also fly with a connection in Catania.

Meridiana flies to Lampedusa from both PMO and CTA, but there are more flights from PMO.

Air Malta flies to both PMO and CTA, but there are more flights to CTA.

If you've got LOTS and LOTS of time to kill, here is the SLOW way to travel from Malta to Lampedusa:

1. Virtu Ferries to Catania

2. Sais Trasporti bus to Agrigento

3. Agrigento City bus to Porto Empedocle

4. SIREMAR overnight ferry to Lampedusa

Here's an even slower route:

1. Virtu Ferries to Pozzallo

2. Trenitalia to Gela (or AST bus to Modica, then another AST bus to Gela)

3. Autolinee SAL bus to Agrigento

4. Agrigento city bus to Porto Empedocle

5. SIREMAR overnight ferry to Lampedusa

How long are you expecting to spend on Lampedusa and Malta?

What would you expect to see with only one night in Sicily?

Hopefully you will spend more time on Lampedusa and Malta.

Thank you very much for all your replies! I will be taking advantage of all the thoughts/advice that was shard. And unfortunatly, will not be spending the bulk of my time in Sicily possibly a night or two and so wanted to know if there was a specific area that one should definetly see? Also, out of curiousity, has anyone taken the ferry from Malta or Lampedusa to Tunis? I am split on Tunis, would anyone say it is safe (as safe can be) for 2 single women travelers? THANKS

Sicily has much to offer in many areas, so it would be more important for you to find the area that just better fits your itinerary and you will be assured of finding special attractions wherever that might be.

Tunis is colourful and wonderful to explore and discover, and it's safe – Enjoy!

There is no ferry (or hydrofoil) between Lampedusa and Tunis. You must fly to Palermo, then take a ferry from Palermo to Tunis.

www.grimaldi-ferries.com

The only ferry (or hydrofoil) connection to Lampedusa is from Porto Empedocle, near Agrigento.

Again, use Palermo as a base and fly!
