What to do in Dandenong with kids?

Hi

We've got one day on our February trip in Melbourne and we'd like to go to the Dandenong Ranges. We have 2 young children (3+1) so we want to do Puffing Billy but not really sure what else we can do. I know there is a wildlife sanctuary but although I'm sure this is great, I'd like to see more of the scenery, any suggestions on places to go?

Many thanks

Are you going to be driving? If so, then driving to Healesville Sanctuary will take you through the Yarra Valley so you will see some beautiful scenery along the way.

Please be aware that Mt Dandenong & the Dandenong Ranges is not close to Dandenong, the suburb. Puffing Billy starts at Belgrave, so when you are looking at a map, this is where you need to plan your trip from. You won't go anywhere near Dandenong.

At Grant's Picnic Ground you can buy seed from the cafe to feed the native birds. They will come and sit on your hand or on your head if you are lucky! http://www.grantsonsherbrooke.com.au/

At Skyhigh you can work your way through a maze skyhighmtdandenong.com.au/skyhigh-maze.aspx while you see the Giant's Chair and other fun things.

Thank you for your replies. We are going to be driving. We planned to do Puffing Billy first at Belgrave but wasn't sure which stop is best to go to ie. Menzies Creek, Emerald etc. I'm just trying to build a bit of an itinerary for the day on where we should go after Puffing Billy.

We want to see Yarra and the Dandenong Ranges but not really sure what towns to visit to see the best spots. Also, my youngest is in a pushchair so is it ideal to visit the Dandenong Ranges National Park?

Many thanks

Probably the shortest trip on Puffing Billy will be long enough for those little ones. Then drive on to Healesville sanctuary. By that time it will almost be time to return to .... ? Melbourne.

At Olinda is the National Rhododendron Gardens and William Rickets Sanctuary full of surprises of statuary and stuff. The towns of Olinda and Sassafras are crafty and have Devonshire teas. There are other small towns.

Not sure what else is available for small children. Or exactly how smooth the walking paths are in the Ranges. There are probably playgrounds here lor there. Nice one at Wandin.
