Airlie Beach is in Queensland and depending on how much time you have in Australia, you could drive it from Sydney, but I think its approx 20hrs (give or take a few hrs). Or you can fly there, I believe you'd land in Proserpine (if memory serves me correctly from when I checked into going there).

I haven't been to Airlie Beach itself, but I hear its quite nice there, so its one of the places on my list to see.

Airlie beach is the gateway to the whitsundays....closest airport is proserpine which is 150km for Mackay.....

the best way to get there is by flying.

www.qantas.com.au

www.virginblue.com.au

driving is not an option unless you have plenty of time...brisbane to airlie beach is 13 hrs....sydney to brisbane is approx 11 hrs...with a quick stop.

so you have a total of say 26 hrs.(min)

flying takes approx 1.59mins....
