ferry from Hamiliton is to Airlie Beach

Hello..

We are staying on Hamilton Is from March31-April 3rd...flying in from Newcastle.

My thought is to take a ferry Airlie Beach..rent a car and spend 2-3 days driving down to Brisbane then flying back to Sydney for our last weekend in Australia.

My questions are...1) is the ferry frequent and easy ? Do we have to book ahead?

2) I know the drive is about 1000 miles to Brisbane...what should we see..where would be nice to stay along the way.

3) since we have 3 days to get to Brisbane..should we go north first? Then head south?

Any suggestions welcome!

Thanks!

Hi Less,

Renting a car one way is a very expensive way to get to Brisbane, you would be better doing the 2-3 days around the region and hiring a car (Hideaway Bay, Conway Beach, Eungella etc). You have not much time to see anything on the way so you may be better off flying from Whitsunday Coast Airport (Proserpine). Ferry's from Hamo are around $36 each way from the marina (it cost's more to go from the airport as there is airport tax involved).

I hope that you have a great time in what ever you choose.

Hi there,

There are 10 ferries a day from Hamilton Island to Shute Harbour, from where you hop on the shuttle bus to Airlie Beach. Fares are $45 each way for the ferry and about $4 for the bus into Airlie Beach. You can book it when you are on the island and know exactly what time you want to depart.

It's a long drive to Brisbane and you'll be missing out on some fabulous spots! Whitsudnay Helper has the right idea - why not stick around Airlie Beach for those 3 days and see some of our beautiful coastal and rainforest sights? You can fly from Proserpine or Mackay Airport to Brisbane or indeed straight to Sydney.

Let us know what you decide to do and have a great trip!

Cheers,

TW
