Airlie Beach 2011

Hello!!

We are looking to come to Australia at the end of Feb 2011 and stay in Sydney for a week and then travel up toward the reef first week of march. Someone has suggested Airlie beach for a relaxing break and good access to diving etc, is this correct? Or does anyone have any other suggestions.

Kt :)

Airlie Beach sound like a fantastic choice, or perhaps look at Cairns, or Port Douglas, all have access to good places to relax and visit the Great Barrier Reef.

happy planning

Thank you!! We had considered Cairns or further up the coast but were advised that it would still be very hot that time of year, does this sound right?

Hello - Have you decided where you're going -- Airlie or Port Douglas? We are also going in February and can't decide which would be the better place to spend 3 days. We want to spend a day going to the reef/diving. We are getting conflicting opinions and are having a hard time deciding! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Katie,

You are making a very nice choice. Airlie Beach is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the beautiful Whitsunday Island. So for you who wants to go diving - You have the choice of diving at Hardy Reef with Fantasea or diving at Knuckle Reef with Cruise Whitsunday. Both of these are days trips. You can also dive at Bait Reef with Anaconda 3 however this is 3 day / 3 night excursion where you sleep on the boat. You can also dive around the Whitsunday Island on a day trip and this would be with Reefjet, Maxi Ragamuffin, Illusions, Dominos, Voyager, Just Diving. There is another - Manataray but she is out on maintenance at the moment. So there is a huge amount of choice and that what we have in the beautiful Whitsundays. Most people will also want to visit our best beach which is Whitehaven Beach which is on Whitsunday Island. Now if you fancy lulling around a beautiful watering hole. We have the Airlie Beach lagoon which is free for all to use. It is a very large swimming pool which covers a huge area with landscapeed gardens, free BBQ's, playgrounds, amenties block, shaded areas just needs you and your swimmers. This is the best spot to relax in. Basking in the sun. So thats it for relaxing and then in the evening you can go to dinner, go dancing or go to one of the beer gardens and have a few drinks. Airlie Beach is visited by many people from all parts of the world. I hope you come and enjoy yourself. Hope this helps.

Diving choices much better from Cairns though a huge percentage cater more to intro dives. So research is important to find the trips that will be a good match for your experience and ability.

very often visitors combo diving from Cairns and sailing the Whitsundays. Both areas have different strengths.

If experienced in diving the very best are the Yongala Wreck (advanced required) which is close to Townsville and the liveaboards that leave from Cairns for 4-7 days and visit the northern reefs and also coral sea reefs. There is an article of these

tripadvisor.com/Travel-g255069-c132395/Cairn…

Shorter to Cairns outer reefs are Pro Dive. Day trip I would consider Silverswift.

Weather could be wet as middle of monsoon season.

Airlie beach itself is real nice.Fantastic views from hillside accommodation. Cairns has this is suburbs but very large city so not all good pointscompact like Airlie.

So good in both but for diving it is better north providing you pick a good trip on a good weather.
