No train service to Ayers Rock. The closest you'll get is onboard the Ghan to Alice Springs, from Adelaide. Ayers Rock is just shy of 7 hours by bus from Alice Springs

train from melbourne to Adelaide, then another from Adelaide to alice springs (the ghan).

then bus or rental car to Uluru.

then back to Adelaide via alice springs.....then to Sydney.

a joyous time (days!) on australia's rail system.

It's not really a practical solution. It's best to fly.

The proposed journey is just not practical. The distances are very long and there is considerable backtracking to get from Uluru to Sydney. The cumulative cost of the train fares is potentially very high.

It would be best to fly Melbourne-Alice Springs-Uluru and then Uluru to Sydney. I suggest that you check the airline websites for competitively priced airfare/accommodation packages for the various sectors.
