Kakadu

Hi!

Need suggestions on a 4 day intinerary of Kakadu! Have heard that the Animal track safari and Yellow water cruise tours are excellent but would love some more information about getting the best out of Kakadu in a limited time. Will probably be self driving with young family but don´t mind doing tours. Any suggestions would be great....

Will you hire a 2WD or 4WD?

What time of year?

Both of these make a big difference to your options so I wouldn't like to comment on an itinerary without this information.

The Yellow Water cruise is good, but unfortunately these days is very overpriced. A good alternative is a cruise on Corroboree Billabong which you could stop in and do on the drive between Darwin and Kakadu.

There are lots of options depending on your interests, how much walking you like to do etc. but here is a suggestion

Day 1- leave Darwin, stop at Fogg Dam along the way, Corroborree Billabong cruise, in Kakadu itself Mamukala wetlands - stay Jabiru.

Day 2 - Bowali visitor centre, head to East Alligator area, Mungarre or Baark walk, Guluumbi cruise (very different to wetland cruise, culturally based), Ubirr walk and sunset (do not miss Ubirr). Stay Jabiru or Cooinda

Day 3 - Animal Tracks (don't know much about this but it would fit in here). Another option would be a Jim Jim/ Twin Falls tour. Stay Cooinda.

Day 4 - Yellow Water walk (the short boardwalk is worth a visit or you can do a longer walk). Warradjun Aboriginal Cultural Centre, Nourlangie, Anbungbung Billabong - drive on to...

Food etc in Kakadu can be expensive but there is a supermarket in Jabiru and free BBQs at Jabiru lake and at Cooinda. The Kakadu Bakery is also good for sandwiches etc.

Good luck with the planning.

Better get your accomodation booking done very soon...

At Jabiru Croc in you can get good value meal packages on top of your accom.

check out the Bowali Visitor centre as this will tell you what walks are good for your children- better still-call them as they are very helpful.
