You can drive, bus or train from Picton to Kaikoura.

What is there to do in Kaikoura? - over on the left of this page is a wee tab saying - Things to do - click on it for options. You can also Google Kaikoura and come up with a wide range of possibilities.

The buses leave from very near the Interislander terminal. If you're on Bluebridge, I think they still have the bus which goes to the bus stop.

The train also leaves from very close to the Ferry Terminal, and connects very smoothly with one of the morning sailings of the InterIslander ( around 10 am from memory).

You can buy combined ferry and train tickets on the 08:25 ferry from Wellington, easy change to train at Picton, arrive Kaikoura right next to the whale watching centre at 15:28. It's a fabulous journey, an experience in its own right. Train continues to Christchurch.

kaikoura is quite a small village, most famous for the whale watching etc. While small it has a beautiful location.
