Hokitika is, after all, in a rain forest, so rain can be expected. The one thing we wished we had realized is how easy it is to get out of the rain by going north, east, south, whatever. For example, while it was raining hard in Hokitika, several hours east in Arthur's Pass it was sunny. (Some natives told us it is not uncommon to go to Christchurch for the day via Arthur's Pass for shopping). Hokitika is an ideal jumping off point as long as this is borne in mind

There are a few myths around about West Coast rain. I think you will find that the amount that falls is quite high, but the number or rain days is low. ie when it rains it fair belts down. However the rest of the time the weather is glorius. In the winter, if it is grey and drizzly on the east coast, it will be beautiful over the hill. You could drive over AP and back in the day.

Not only is the climate different across the main range, but I am reliably informed by locals that the climate can be very different at different places on the coast. It may be pouring in Franz Josef but sunshine in Ross and different again in Hokitika etc

The annual rain days is not a lot differnt to that of Auckland, and the amount of t=rain is only about half a metre more. simply put, it is just the size of the rain drops, they are bigger so accumulate a higher amount of rain.

yes the climates are usualy opposite east coast to west coast. not alway, but if it is raining on one coast, it is often fine on the other
