Take a look. Tell me what you think. Please make suggestion

Hi everyone;

My husband and I are in our mid 30s and are Brits living in Melbourne for the next couple of years due to work commitments. We're taking the opportunity to see this part of the World and would like to spend a week in October exploring the Perth, Freo and Margaret River area.

We hope that next year we can return and do Perth to Broome over a much longer period of time but for now a taster of WA will have to do.

Plan is to fly into Perth on Saturday 1st October arriving 10:45am. We'll pick up a hire car and head to Freo checking in at Port Mill B&B for the next 3 nights. Hope to have a walk round Freo, stroll through the market. A friend has suggested the suburbs of Claremont and Subiaco for a wander before spending the rest of the evening in Freo.

Sunday 2nd October hope to spend at Rottnest Island. Should I book transportation there in advance or wait until we're there just to check the weather is ok?

Monday 3rd October spend the day in Perth wandering around the city and spending time in Kings Park. Anywhere else we should head to? Suggestions as to whether we should drive or take public transport from Freo?

Tuesday 4th October hit the road to Margaret River going through Busselton, Dunsborough and Yallingup. Any good recommendations for lunch in any of these areas? Check in at Margaret River guesthouse for next 3 nights. Dinner in Margaret River. Should I make dinner reservations or will we be ok just to walk in to places?

Wednesday 5th October - day tour with Top Drop Tours

Thursday 6th October - a day to spend exploring ourselves. Thinking about driving to Prevelly, taking a look at Leeuwin lighthouse and Augusta. Any good lunch stops or other places we should drop in at? We won't have done chocolate or cheese on our wine tour so should we do that? Where are those places?

Friday 7th October return to Freo. Check in at Fothergills for the one night. Perhaps take a drive to Cottesloe, Scarborough and Hillary's in the afternoon before spending the evening in Freo. Potentially could have dinner in either Cottesloe, Scaborough or Hillary's - any recommendations?

Saturday 8th October - morning whale watching tour with Oceanic Cruises departing Shed B. Back in time for lunch before heading off to the the airport to catch a 17:00 flight back to Melbourne.

I've asked questions along the way so any responses would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Your itinerary looks okay to me.

For places for lunch & wineries I've enjoyed -

For vineyards - Xanadu - beaut restaurant

Evans and Tate - lunch up the road - Woody Nook

Vasse Felix

Sienna Estate - lovely restaurant

October will be still cool so heading for Rottnest Island ; I would wait to book to see what the weather has to offer.

Also check with the Perth De's on the school hols dates as this could affect bookings.

Your plan is great but I hope you are planning for late October. School holidays are apparently late this year because of CHOGM and take in the first 2 weeks of October.

Unfortunately work commitments mean that we can only do 1st week of October so will have to contend with the masses from the school holidays. It's that or no holiday so the choice has been made so we will have to manage. I have flights and accommodation already booked though and plan to book dinners or lunches once we've decided where to avoid disappointment.

Re: Dinner in Margaret River - You shouldnt need to book any restaurants in MR. There are quite a few to choose from along the main street and many have their menus displayed outside so a stroll thru town when you arrive will give you an idea what choices are available and prices. Ive always winged it and never booked. But...If all else fails, the Settlers Tavern right in the middle of town has some pretty good meals (generous serves too) and their kitchen is open all day, every day.

As noted above, many wineries have restaurants open for lunch only and are quite popular so perhaps a booking then might be advisable. When you're cruising around the region you'll no doubt discover lots of nice winery restaurants which you could book for the following day if seating is unavailable at the time.

If you're looking for something casual to eat in Augusta, I can recommend the fish and chip shop on Albany Terrace. Its called "The Colourpatch Cafe" (google it if interested). Nothing fancy...just a good feed of fish and chips whilst sitting on the banks of the estuary can be a welcome break.

If you're looking for a coffee break between Prevally and Augusta, check out the Boranup Gallery where they have a cafe attached (complete with wandering peacocks :)) In fact check out the gallery anyway...they have some fantastic works from the local artisans.

Sorry but as a local dealing with guests everyday we ALWAYS recommend booking restaurants ( OK the day before) but when town is busy so are the restaurants and the best book out first.

Local top spots

Waves, The Arc of Iris, The Must and The gnarabar... Bar Bohos is fun. Setllers is good as is The Margaret River Hotel where you need not book, but last night 2 of my guests said the line to get in at 6.45pm had 20 waiting in line... and this is August off season... don't say you weren't advised!!!!!

Of course if you are happy to eat much later then wing it but if you like a table at 7ish BOOK!!

Yep that is happening regularly, last week Saturday night Margaret River Hotel, 7pm, 8 tables ahead of my hungry guests who couldn't get a table at Waves or Must Winebar.

Settlers is heaving on weekends at any given time. Just announced 3rd time winners of Best Pub Wine List in Australia.. they are legends!

The Arc are enjoying a holiday at the moment so that does remove about 50 seats...

As for the busy season, we recommend making bookings in early December or being prepared to eat at very late hours..
