Accommodation in or near Geelong

We will be driving from Jindabyne to Geelong (then the GOR) on 18 October. How long will this drive take? Do we bypass Melbourne (fingers crossed)? Could you please suggest somewhere reasonably priced for an overnight stay either in Geelong or even before we reach there (if it's as long a drive as I think it is)?

1. Probably the quickest route would be to go to Cooma and take the Monaro Hwy to Cann River to pick up the Princes Hwy to Melbourne.

I usually divert at Warrigal Rd (because I don't want to use the Tollway)onto Dandenong Rd at Oakleigh which will take you directly onto the West Gate Bridge and through to Geelong.

Pick up a Melbourne map at Orbost Info Centre (Slab Hut)

From Jindabyne on this route will take about 8 hours.

Punt Road apartments on the corner of Warrigal Rd and Dandenong Rd. at Oakleigh. They will be on the www.wotif.com.au

You would need to be up very early the next day before the peak hour traffic builds up to continue your journey..

2. From Jidabyne drive west through Corryong to Albury/Wodonga to pick up the Hume Freeway and through to the Western Ring road and onto the Princes Hwy to Geelong. This route may be a little shorter but probably looking at 6-7 hours.

Drive through to Torquay for your accom. or you could find the Motel at Laverton not long after you pick up the Princes Hwy (maybe its called Geelong Freeway now). The motel is quite close to the freeway, but you do have to turn into minor roads. .

Thanks, gardenboffin. Will study the map and decide which route might suit us better. I like the way you give advice on avoiding the tollroads! Do you think we need to pre-book accommodation for our nights along the GOR or will it be OK to be more flexible and stop when we feel like it?

I would think you can safely stop when you feel like it. If you can't see anything look in at Info Centres for good advice as some motels are off the main road. And if you feel like driving a bit further but it is getting late ask at info cenres for accom further along the route.

Thanks again, gardenboffin. We like to be flexible if possible. That's the way we did it when we were touring New Zealand 2 years ago. The Info Centres there were excellent too.

Unless you particularly want to go to either Geelong or Torquay - stay on the Princes Freeway /Ring Road thru to Waurn Ponds, then onto Angelsea and Lorne.

The Ring Road is going to save you 30 - 45 minutes of travel time by avoiding Geelong city.
