HELP - Good beach town near Mackay?

We are heading to Campwin Beach near Mackay in July for a week's holiday with friends. We then wanted to spend another week somewhere on our own for a relaxing beach holiday - as relaxing as possible with a 2 and 4 year old! Can anyone recommend a beach on the mainland (we're not into resorts) that offers some restaurants/cafes/pubs for meals plus a lovely beach to play on during the day? There is so much focus on Airlie and the islands that we're struggling to find any other information....

Dolphin Heads on the northern side of Mackay is nice, and there's no shortage of accommodation.

Hi there, I agree with the last poster, Bowen is a good quiet destination with lovely beaches. Another great option going in the opposite direction is Yeppoon.

Airlie Beach is also definately worth considering and since you are travelling with kids I highly recommend www.adventurewhitsunday.com.au. It isn't next to a beach but this place has everything you could need to stay sane with the kids. Cheers
