Wedding New years eve

Hi folks

We are in our mid fifties and have daughter getting married in Sydney on New Years eve. Meeting up on 20.12.2009 with wedding party, but intent going to Australia about two weeks before this to see a bit more of the country. Any hints on where we should go, have irish colouring so will have to have factor 50 sunlotion on! Could we fly into other airport than sydney and maybe hire a car or camper van - if so where would anyone advise us to fly to Any ideas would be gratefully considered.

Hi Molly,

you could really go anywhere you wanted to in Australia but if you an help us by letting us know a few things first, then posters be able to tailor some advice for you. For example, what you like to do and see, budget limits, do you want to stay in NSW or travel to other states etc.

An important thing to note is that you'll be coming to Australia during school holidays so accommodation is very likely be more expensive then. Also, accommodation for this school holiday period (late Dec til late January) books out months in advance, including caravan parks. So you'll need to make some decisions about your proposed holiday pretty quickly.

If you do plan to do a self drive holiday, you'll need to book the car/van well in advance too.

As for flying into one airport and out of another, that very much depends on the airline / tickets you buy. If your tickets/airline has restrictions about flying into and out of different airports, you can always purchase a separate rtn plane ticket for flights within Australia.

Thanks for your reply.

We are okay for accom. from 20th December to 2nd Jan. as daughter has booked a house for both families, it is just the period from about 6th December to 20th we need to get sorted. How many weeks are the kids out of school before xmas? We like sightseeing and have a motorhome here in Ireland. Go to Europe for three weeks each year when we get holidays from work, otherwise we travel around Ireland at weekends, bank holidays etc. Like along the coast line anywhere we go. Driving at leisure where could be fly into to hire a car or motorhome and then arrive in Sydney for 20th Dec.? Not really into swimming as had bad experience once. Thanks again for reply.

Hi Molly

Here's a great site with all the term breaks for schools across Australia. australia.gov.au/topics/…school-term-dates

The term dates vary from state to state and also depending on whether or not it is public school or private school. Generally speaking, there's not a huge difference in when the public/private schools break for holidays.

In NSW, they break at the end of the week before Christmas whereas in Qld, they break about a week before NSW.

If you wanted to fly into say Brisbane, you could take your time coming down the coast road spending a few days here and there. It all depends on what you want to see.

An accommodation alternative to hotels could be the various caravan parks, some of which have resort type facilities and on-site vans. See http://www.big4.com.au/

You could spend a couple of days in Brisbane - http://www.ourbrisbane.com/see-and-do and head south. The Gold Coast although quite touristy and known for it’s theme parks, has some very nice spots, such as O’Reilly’s in the hinterland - http://www.oreillys.com.au/

Head down the coast to Byron Bay - www.visitbyronbay.com/pages.asp?code=500 and explore that area before heading down towards Coffs Harbour - http://www.visitcoffsharbour.com/ or Bellingin - http://www.bellingermagic.com/ -explore this area including Urunga and Dorrigo. Nambucca Heads is a lovely port town too- http://www.nambuccatourism.com.au/ , so between Coffs, Bellingen and Nambucca, you really have lots of places to explore – coastal and “mountains”, each with something different to offer. A few hours drive south is Port Macquarie, a popular holiday spot with lots of accommodation alternatives - http://www.portmacquarieinfo.com.au/. And a couple of hours further south is Forster-Tuncurry with beautiful blue ocean and lovely lakes too - http://www.greatlakes.org.au/ .

You could also stop at Port Stephens/Nelson Bay http://www.portstephens.org.au/ or Newcastle www.visitnewcastle.com.au/visitnewcastle.asp or head to the Hunter Valley visitnsw.com/Hunter_Valley_Wineries_P671.aspx before motoring on to Sydney.

I’d suggest that you do a search of google maps to see where all these places are and then plan your trip accordingly.
