Culburra or further down on the South Coast? January 2014

Late booking for a family of 2adt/2chd. Flying into Sydney for a few days, then hiring a car 04-11Jan. Trying to decide where to stay on the south coast. We plan on driving the grand pacific drive and stopping off at some of the beaches along the way. Looking to do a bit of surfing, walking and generally chilling out.

Would Culburra be a nice place to use as a base for 7nts? Is there a good supermarket within driving distance?

Or would we be best to do a 3nt stop and maybe a 4nt stop down further? Keen to see as much as we can of the south coast (Bermagui, Eden, Merimbula) but don't know if that is too ambitious. We will need to return back to Sydney on 11 Jan.

When in January are you arriving? January is peak season here and if it is early January, you will find it hard to find decent accommodation anywhere on the coast. Many places also have 7 days minimum holiday rental at that time of the year. Late January would be easier to find accommodation. Motels would probably have some vacancies, but at that time would be expensive and not my idea of a place to stay for longer than a night.

Is there any particular reason you picked Culburra? IMO It is not considered a very popular tourist destination. It not that far down the south coast. I don't think it is a good base from which to explore South coast.

IMO Jervis Bay is nicer and would be much better. My favourite places on the south coast are Bermagui and Merimbula but they are at the far end of the south coast. There are many very nice places all along south coast. So it might be a matter of what you can find at that time of the year.

Race Course beach cabin park at Bawley Point and Merry beach caravan park at Kiola just a few kms down the road might be worth looking at.

To get to them turn off the Princess highway at Termeil between Ulladulla and Bates man Bay. The cabin park at Merry beach has good facilities, last time we stopped there had a number of kangaroos and wild birds on site and would be a good place to stay for a family.

As OP indicated it is peak season and accommodation if you can find it might be expensive.

Race course beach used to be part of the Big 4 group and I know Merry beach has its own web site.

Do a google search and see what you can come up with it might be worth while.

Just a tip, of you get to the far south coast, Eden is a much nicer, quieter spot to stay than Merimbula.
