12 drive to Te Anau from ? - the glow worm caves and Ata Whenua have already been suggested.

13 explore Milford Sound? this is a full day trip

Te Anau to Wanaka is a 3 to 4 hour drive, depending on which route is taken - continuing on to Fox the same day is madness.

Driver fatigue is the main cause of NZ road accidents - the drive to Fox requires a rested, alert and focused driver to handle the often narrow, steep and twisty road.

If you enjoy walking, I highly recommend the walk up to Key Summit near the end of the Routeburn Track, on the road to Milford. Best view/effort ratio in the area. (And if you would enjoy a rustic, out-of-the-ordinary stay... spend the night at Gunns Camp... which also makes it easy to get to Milford for the early cruises, before the bus traffic.)

The overnight cruises on Milford, or my favourite, Doubtful Sound, are another option for a different place to spend a night, albeit one with a significant price tag.

An evening walk to the (free, donation requested) Wildlife Centre along Lake Te Anau will let you see kea, takahe, kakariki, moorpork, etc.

Lots of nice walks in Te Anau. I would recommend going to the cinema to see the fiordland movie. Stunning photography. The walk past the DOC centre and to the wild bird area is also recommended. You can see NZs endangered takahe, kaka, kea and other recovery birds. It is also free. Their are glow worm caves to visit, a trip on the lake. Even a day walk up the first hut on the Kepler, thatnis just stunning on a clear day but its a big walk.
