Milford track in a day

I heard about a day trip of milford track tour but can we do this alone without joining a tour group? As the tour is $195/person?

To get the great views you have to get above the bush line.. All 3 tracks mentioned have alpine sections, and on the 3, the McKinnon Pass, on the Milford track is the shortest. You climb from the Clinton valley, over the pass, and down into the Arthur valley. On the Kepler you are above the bush line a couple of hours after leaving Lake Te Anau, and it's about a 45 minute walk to the Luxmore hut, where you either spend the night, or turn around & come back. From the hut it's about another 60 minutes to the top of Mt Luxmore ( aprox 4500 feet). thIs can easily be included in a day walk, otherwise you continue on down into the Iris burn, and the Iris Burn hut. From this poin on you are in the bush again. The views from the track atr stunnuing. Right below you is the South Fiord of Lake Te Anau, and you can see almost to the head of the lake 42 miles away. On the other side you look down onto Lake Manapouri, and in the distance is the Waiau valley running down to the sea at Tuatapere.

Of the three tracks the Routeburn has the longest alpine section, and the views from there are equally stunning
