from the DOC website on the Routeburn

'Off peak/winter Season – May to mid October

High snow loadings and avalanche danger can occur, especially between Lake Harris and Mackenzie Hut and may well make the track impassable. Some facilities are removed from the huts and track during the winter.'

If the tour group is offering this option as part of day Milford Cruise package, then it will be just the first bit of the Routeburn - 3 hour return from Milford Road at the Divide up towards the Howden Hut - view point is Key Summit which is about 800m high. (This is not the really high bit of the track)The track will all the same be steep, rocky and probably muddy at that time of the year and may even have some snow/ice on it but if the weather is favourable then you will get an amazing view from the Key - down three different valleys.

It is approximately 70kms from Te Anau to Routeburn Track Divide entry point.

It is approximately 120kms from Te Anau to Milford Sound.

There is reqular transport. - see Track Transport on the DOC site

There are other walks in the area that you could do if the Key Summit is not a "go" - visit the DOC information bureau in Te Anau.
