Milford or Doubtful

This is a difficult one to advise on, since everyone’s expectations are different. Milford Sound is the better known, with it's iconic Mitre Peak, it is more dramatic, with sheer cliffs rising over a mile above your boat. It is also the better known and easier to get to, and for this reason, if you have to choose just one, I would say go with Milford. Doubtful, on the other hand, is much larger, and the scenery is absolutely stunning. If I had to make a choice between the overnight tours I would have to say Doubtful Sound, but you will not be disappointed with either Milford or Doubtful.

The overall experience on Doubtful is probably better, since you get to experience Lake Manapouri, and also the giant West Arm power station. Even if power stations are not your thing, this is something not to be missed. A huge chamber 700 feet below lake Manapouri, with access by coach via a spiral tunnel. The best choice, if you have time, is to do the Milford Day trip, and the Doubtful overnight cruise, but of course this bumps the price up also.

The advantage of Doubtful Sound is that the Real Journeys boat is the only boat allowed on the sound overnight, so you (along with the other 30 or so on the boat), will be the only people there. This makes for quite a unique experience.

Milford is closer to Queenstown only as the crow flies - driving wise Manapouri (where the Doubtful Sound trip departs from) is closer. It takes approx 2 hrs to drive from Queenstown to Manapouri, it takes approx 4 hours to drive to Milford. Milford has higher tourist numbers than Doubtful because Doubtful is harder to get to (you take a boat trip across Lake Manapouri (1hr) then a bus trip across Wilmot Pass (3/4hr) to get to Doubtful Sound. This is because there is no road access to the West Arm of Lake Manapouri.

Hi Kent

My recommendation is;

if doing a day trip then visit Milford Sound. The road in and out is brilliant.

if you wish to overnight on one of the sounds then without doubt, that would be Doubtful Sound.

But either way, you can't go wrong. Enjoy :)

Do you like to fish?

We caught huge groupers on Doubtful.

Our captain filleted them, cooked one up, and we had enough left for dinner the next night!

Nothing better than fresh catch cooked up immediately.

Milford is like a parade of tourist ships. On Doubtful, you feel like there's no one anywhere nearby.

Suit yourself!
