maori cultural experience

I am planning a summertime, 3-week trip to both islands, 1 week North and 2 weeks South. I would prefer to stay out of Rotorua, which sounds really touristy (in a bad way).

What are some good venues for a Maori cultural experience like a dinner, dancing demonstration, etc.

Yep, you can'y have your cake and it it too Yooper, Zappers is right, if you have limited time it is teh only way to experience Maori Culture, if you want uncontrived Maori Culture that is served up naturally you would need to come up to a place like the Hokianga which is 80 pe cent Maori, and stay somewhere like Mitimiti, a remote Maori village that has a self contained cottage by teh sea. You would then naturally be drawn into the village life, be taken fishing, etc.
