Beaches, swimming, fly fishing and wine

Just starting to plan a 10 day trip to NZ in Jan/Feb and would like to do the follwowing :

1. Swim in the ocean

2. Fly fishing (ocean and/or rivers)

3. Tour wine country

Is this possible in 10 days ? Would anyone care to suggest an itinerary? Thanks so much. The country has so much to offer it is overwhelming trying to narrow it down.

I think for swimming, fly fishing and wine drinking your best choice would be the North Island, around Napier/Hastings, and Gisbourne.

THis is out of my area, and it's years since I've toured the NI. Zappers would be the best person to help you with this, but she is off swanning around France at the moment.

Have a look back through previous posts, there are endless itenerary suggestions, and you may find one which suits you;

How about Tasman Bay/ Nelson for lovely warm swimming, in beautiful clear waters, & then on to Blenheim for wine,

Then travel down to the West Coast for some great trout fishing.

Fly (trout) fishing is only in lakes & rivers & if you really want to catch a fish I really recommend you get a guide to take you out for a day. You will see some great country that way too.

Not quite vbc, swanning around Rotorua doesn't sound so grand does it? Off to Germany on Monday, followed by France. At the Mtnbike Worlds in Rotorua all week until Sunday- have a day off today so I can pack..........eeeekkkkk have too much- mental note-remove the kitchen sink................ :)

jas, I would suggest (in this order, allocate number of days to suit) Coromandel Peninsula, Mt Maunganui ( both for ocean swimming & ocean flyfishing charters, probably Whitianga in Coromandel best for qty of fishing charters) Mt Maunganui is in the Bay of Plenty.

Rotorua- Geothermal, Maori culture and trout fly fishing (13 fishable lakes)- Lake Tarawera fabulous for trout.

Taupo- Trout fishing, lake and river, world famous for trophy trout- check out Tongariro River and Tauranga-Taupo River both internationally reknowned for fishing along with Waitahanui picket line. There are some great charters by helicopter with a guide into the back country around the Taupo area.

Hawkes Bay- Napier & Hastings, excellent wineries and restaurants check out my inside page

See, I knew Zappers would come through.

You know Zappers, if you took your laptop you could spend your vacation keeping up to date on TA :-}

Wow, thanks everyone and especially Zappers. This sounds like the ticket.

There is a New Brighton beach quite near Christchurch, but the water temperature might be too cold to swim.
