Suggested places to stop btwn Christchurch & Greymouth

Hello,

We are heading to NZ next month (Feb) for our Honeymoon and will be driving between Christchurch and Greymouth - any suggested places to stop to sight see, eat, experience, etc.

We are a couple in our 30s who enjoy hikes, scenery, breweries, etc.

As always your suggestions are greatly appreciated,

Mary

Hi,

Arthurs Pass is the logical place to stop for a wee break, a walk or a week ;-)

Cheers,

Don't miss the Otira Viaduct lookout (it is on the right so take care when turning) - well signposted a short distance past the actual Pass. You can admire the engineering feat that is the Viaduct and also see our famous alpine parrot up close while they attempt to demolish your rental car!!

I second weta's suggestion of Castle Hill but do note that we are referring to the rock formations, not the village itself. Park in the car park and take the short walk up the hill to wander around the rocks.

If you are the adventurous types you might also be interested in Cave Stream whereby you can walk (scramble) through an underground stream. You will need a good torch and spare batteries each to do this, however. Google Cave Stream if it appeals.

Arthur's Pass also has many great walks of varying lengths. You are sure to find one that suits the amount of time you have available. And as zhuhai2007 says, be sure to stop at the Otira Viaduct lookout.
