Franz Josef to Christchurch

Does anybody know if we can drive from Franz Josef to Christchurch in one day in August? We have a 4WD or are we dreaming?

Welcome to the forum AB :)

In fine weather and good driving conditions it is an easy enough drive of about 5 hours non-stop.

So yes, if conditions are good you could. I wouldn't dilly dally too much enroute as you don't want to be still driving into dusk.

if it is raining, snowy, icy, you would be best to break the journey in Hokitika.

While a 4WD is great for snow, it won't drive any better on ice than a car will. So do take care. Shady bits of the road and bridges can remain icy all day long.

Have snow chains for the vehicle and know how to fit them.

Safe travels :)
