Hello again,

As a first time visitor and visiting in winter, can I suggest - keep it simple. Pick 3 - 4 places you would really like to see and spend a couple of days in each place to give you some opportunity to look around that area and do a couple things there. There is always next visit to explore those areas you did not see this trip around.

10 days allows enough time for you to do a sort of loop around back to CHC if that is where you need to fly out of.

Driving from CHC will allow more opportunities to stop and sight see when you want to, though the Tranz Alpine train trip is great as well. Your choice.

Consider visiting Queenstown and Wanaka as the snow covered mountains and aqua blue lakes are spectacular. You can do a bus/ cruise or fly/cruise tour to Milford Sound from Queenstown as well.

You can include a visit to Aoraki (Mt Cook) and overnight Lake Tekapo as one way to journey back to CHC or even start off from CHC and go that way to Wanaka and Queenstown staying at Lake Tekapo on the way.

Really, there are several ways you can go once you decide where you want to visit along the way. Just allow extra driving times for winter conditions and sight seeing and comfort stops between your destinations. Base your driving hours between 9am and 3pm each day to ensure no night driving.

cheers :)

thank you,

we fly into chch and out of queenstown.

we are thinking 2 nights franz glacier, 2 nights wanaka, 2 nights te anau and 3 nights queenstown so that allows 1 night to get from chch to franz.

yes i agree about just seeing what we want for now.

where would you recommend we stay between chch and franz? we arrive into chch at 3pm so other posts on here say for us to stay in chch for 1 night? we can be up early then and head straight to franz stopping along the way maybe??

Sounds great! First night in CHC. You can certainly make Franz Josef the next day - it's 379kms and with stops along the way you can make a day of it.

You may wish to stop in Arthur's Pass village - comfort and coffee stop. Perhaps Hokitika for lunch and then on to Franz Josef for your stopover.

Great scenery through the Pass - watch for the Kea's - native birds that love to pester you for food or just eat bits off your car :) Take extra care on this road as it can be icy and is twisty in places as well.

Hokitika is a lovely coastal town with an interesting history - great view up on the hill near the cemetery as you come in to Hokitika.

Very twisty road in and around Franz Josef and through to Fox Glacier - take extra care through this leg of your journey.

Enjoy the views and scenery!

All the best for your trip and welcome to N.Z :)

* June the 13th is winter.

* when you pick up your car, make sure it has chains, and that you know how and when to fit them

* listen to the radio for road /traffic warnings

* Watch the TV news for weather warnings.

* it is mid winter. do not depart Christchurch until 9 am

* watch for large illuminated signs which may say "Chains essential, closed to towing" this advice is saying there is either heavy snow or ice ahead.

* Make an alernative plan for if you can not travel this way, consider either Lewis pass or via Tekapo.
