City Centre or Akaroa?

We are going to be arriving in NZ Feb 2013. We will be hiring a car and spending a few days in the Christchurch area. Should we stay in the City Centre, or somewhere on the outskirts or coast like Akaroa? We intend to visit Orana Park, The International Antartic Centre and Akaroa.

Hi Tricia :)

Not sure how long you plan to stay but perhaps opt for one or two nights Chch to explore the city and get over jet lag, then one or two nights Akaroa to explore the coastal delights.

Happy travels :)

There is still lots to do in Christchurch but it has become a lot more decentralised. There isn't really a city centre as there was pre earthquakes. Though by 2013 hopefully this would be changing.

Having your own vehicle (with GPS) is a great advantage. There is a public transport system but this will chew up a lot of your time.

Akaroa presents you with a different kind of holiday to the attractions of Christchurch. At that time of year, it will still be warm enough to enjoy the watersports and bays around Akaroa.

That might be a good idea to split the time. Thanks for your help.

The only problem with Akaroa is that it is out on a bit of a tangent about 1hour from the centre of Christchurch. While central Christchurch is a bit of a blank canvas there is plenty of accomadation in Riccarton, Merivale etc.

New cafes and bars are opening all the time. It's become quite exciting seeing things "pop up".

My vote would be to do a halfday in Chch, got to Akaroa overnight and then back to Chch.

If you are there longer a day trip north could get you to Kaikoura and maybe back via Hanmer Springs/

Hi & welcome...it depends what you like...Christchurch is recovering. It is a city. Many of the things tourists used to see & do are no longer there or functioning but if it's bars & cafes you want then go for it. They are popping up all over the place.

Akaroa is a quaint historic village with an abundance of walks, water activities, great restaurants & galleries. Once again it is due for many cruise ships over the summer as Lyttleton port is out of action. The schedule of ships will go onto the akaroa.com site (a new website is in development stage) so I'd advise you to keep an eye on that & see what is happening. Akaroa is an excellent place to relax & unwind & I'd head there from the airport either by shuttle or rental car. But make sure you book somewhere to stay. There is lots of accommodation in the bays of the inner harbour as well as the outer peninsula. Have fun whatever you decide :)

I love Akaroa but would find it hard to spend more than a couple of days there. Unless you are into the longer walks etc there are limited things to 'see and do'. Christchurch still has lots to do, including some experiences that are unique to a post-earthquake city. I mean pop-up bars like Smash-box and Carlton Corner, or just having a drive around the city centre and visiting the re-start container mall - a great example of innovative thinking.

Of course we still have Sumner, the botanical gardens, the Museum, punting in the park, Willowbank and Orana and the unmissable Antarctic Centre.

It may be well worth splitting your trip to spend some time in Christchurch!
