There is no need to prebook Helicopters or the cruise at Milford Sound. Milford Sound to Queenstown is about 300 kilometres and takes about 4 to 5 hours depending on the number of stops you make.

The best way to see Milford Sound is coach cruise fly from Queenstown. If you are going to Milford Sound for the first time take the coach because the drivers commentary will give you the local and geological history of the area. Most people who drive themselves to Milford are totally oblivious of the origins of those unique landscapes and sadly their experience is diminished.

Yes you can take the coach from Te Anau but since you must return back to Te Anau there is no point in flying Milford Sound to Queenstown. Luxury coach from Queenstown to Milford Sound, do the cruise in Milford Sound and then fly back to Queenstown. This is the ultimate way to experience this scenic wonderland.

For your travel times look at www.aamaps.co.nz

If you are going to Aoraki/Mt Cook i think you should try to stay there. There are about 4 accommodation choices there to suit most budgets. Nothing like watching a sunset on Mt Cook.

Christchurch to Mount Cook is quite a do-able drive though you could break at Lake Tekapo which is quite beautiful but the rest of the drive from there to Mount Cook is quite amazing. There is a range of accomodation. I have reviewed both the Hermitage and Mount Cook Alpine Lodge but there are other options. Large Department of Conservation centre which gives you all the info you need for tramping or short walks and much about the history of the area.

Milford Sound is not a day trip from Queenstown, unless you take the bus. It is a 13 hour trip!

And best not to drive it the winter months either. Is the road difficult to drive? It would seem so from the high number of accidents on the road. If you are a confident driver and are used to a narrow, twisty and steep road which is likely to be wet due to the high rainfall, then you won't have any problem.

Otherwise take the bus. Either bus from Te Anau - 8 hour trip or Queenstown - 13 hour trip.

Safe travels :)

You say you don't want to know the history of the area. Thats fine, but many people are interested in the geological and natural history of these areas.

If you combine the scenic beauty of Milford Sound/Mount Cook and take an interest in all the aspects of nature that these places possess it can change your life.

You are obviously into the scenic aspects already, but if you open your mind to all the natural geological processes that occurred to form these scenic wonders, it will greatly enhance your experience.

When we went to Milford Sound we drove to Te Anau, stayed a night there and then drove through to Milford Sound. We did an overnight boat trip which was amazing.

Self driving suited us, the road wasn't difficult but it was December. Stopping to look at the waterfalls and cheeky Kea was part of the experience.

The drive back to Queenstown was about 5 hours from memory. It is very picturesque so didn't feel too long.
