Cellphone in Christchurch

I'm going to be studying abroad this coming semester at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch. My program has a company which I can get a cellphone through but I think it might be cheaper if I do it independently. Can anyone tell me about the cellphone services in New Zealand and the rates, etc? Thanks!

The 2 main services are Telecom and Vodafone.

You would be best to buy a phone and hook up to 'prepay' service, which has no monthly fees. Have a look at the sites below for rates.

You can also buy a phone from places like The Warehouse, Dick Smith, Noel Leeming etc

vodafone customer service was very slow and internet site did not work. the sim cards were not cheap $35 - but might be worth it for a few months. be sure to check the web and the store for deals as they don't sign you up for the best plans unless you call and specifically request it. they currently have an offer of $2 for 1 hours of landline calls, plus 50cents per minute to mobiles. Of course, incoming are free, so have people call you!
