Rotorua New Zealand

Can anyone recommend a hotel/motor lodge in Rotorua for about $200 for a family of four, plus what would be the best place to visit if we only had one day.

Depends on the ages of the children, the weather, your budget & your interests.

I suggest spending an evening at a Maori cultural evening e.g. Mitai ( would add on the extra Rainbow Springs by night tour for an added $11 per adult) or Tamaki tours. www.mitai.co.nz or www.maoriculture.co.nz.

The Agrodome has a good show several times daily and most children enjoy this.

Zorbing, bungy jumping, swoop, extreme fall are all beside or close to the Agrodome. Exciting entertainment for teenagers.

Free viewing of bubbling mud & boiling water are at Kuirau Park. On a Saturday morning there is a small produce market here.

Te Puia, Waiotapu, Waimungu Valley & Orakei Korako (take the Riverjet to this one ) are all interesting geothermal parks.

Luging and the Gondola are also great fun for families.

The Museum, the Buried Village, the Duck tour of three lakes, horse riding adventures, are all other options. There are things to do in Rotorua that I have not mentioned but as you only have one day when you really need a minimum of three, I haven't gone into too much detail.... this post is long enough already!

Accommodation, sorry don't know any hotels prices but your cheaper option may be to stay at a motel or cabins at a motor camp ( there are several). To get a better insight into the N.Z. way of life, you may like to stay at a homestay or bed & breakfast. www.athomeinrotorua.co.nz. Some will negotiate child rates.

As I said, it all depends on ages & interests.

Enjoy your holiday

Many thanks for your reply about the places to visit - wish we could stay longer than one day - our boys are both teenagers so the zorbing etc sounded good.

We just got back from Rotorua today after a wonderful weekend. We go there a bit. This time my teenage boys did white water rafting with Wet n Wild. They absolutely loved it and it lasts abit longer than the Zorb., We did a long raft but there are shorter ones.. One river boasts the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world at 7 metres and it is only 15 minutes out of Rotorua and would still leave the afternoon free to do something touristy. Depending on what time you are visiting you will get lots of accommodation for under $200. We have stayed in all the main Hotels and a few motels. We just stayed in the Novotel as they have a good winter package for $160 including breakfast for 2 adults /2 kids under 16 but it is more expensive in the summer time. Rydges normally has a bed and breakfast package for $150 Regal palms is a very nice motel with lots of afcilities like tennis courts and mini golf etc. but is on the upper end of the $ A very smart exectutive 2 bedroom with spa costs about $300 and they go down from there. Quality heritage is over the road and have lots of facilities as well but is a bit older than Regal Palms but always has specials. Hope this helps Jbr
