Hi TS :)

When you arrive in Chch, where have you just arrived from? If you haven't been in NZ or Sydney for the previous 24 hours then please don't drive on arrivel in NZ - jet lagged drivers have caused some horrific accidents.

Plus the drive Chch to Dunedin is not the lovely coastal road many imagine it to be - it is inland and crosses flat farmland for mile after tedious mile.

Aorkai/Mt Cook and Fox/Franz are 485kms apart - seperated by a mountain chain. Arthur's Pass is not enroute anywhere in this itinerary.

so my suggestion;

25 arrive Chch, explore

26 drive to Hanmer Springs

27 drive Lewis Pass to Abel Tasman National Park

28 explore, kayak

29 drive to Kaikoura via Blenheim

30 drive to Arthur's Pass

31 drive to Franz Josef

1 drive to Wanaka

2 explore - Puzzling World?

3 drive to Dunedin

4 explore Otago Peninsula

5 drive Catlins to Te Anau

6 explore Milford, stay Te Anau

7 drive to Queenstown

8 explore

9 more

10 drive Lindis Pass to Aoraki/Mt Cook - fab drive

11 explore Tasman glacier and icebergs

12 drive to Chch

13 fly out

(dates here are shown as 25/3, not 3/25)

hope this helps :)

Thank you very much for your responses! WL-your detailed list was very helpful. Hi OZ - we would like to horse ride - best spot? Are there Sky Bridges vs zooming zip lines? Yes, would love to see glacier&rainforest. Better to visit Milford or Doubtful? How to decide to travel clockwise or counter clockwise? See what the weather is doing? Will mainly stay in clean, cheap lodging - I hear hostels & holiday parks are good way to go. If so, can I buy a hostel membership when I get there? Which one? IYA?

Hi,

My daughter-in-law, who competes with cutting horse here in OZ did a horse ride/LOTR tour out of Glenorchy (30min from Queenstown) and still raves about it. Check at "The Station" in Queenstown for bookings, they will pick up from your accommodation and drop you back after the ride.

If you ride up the Skyline Gondola in Queenstown to the luge and restaurant the view is amazing over Queenstown and the early sitting of the Bistro makes the best of the view in daylight and the lights of town in the dark on the way back down. The bistro meal has been great for us on all but one occasion, I think we have been six or eight times. Up there as well as the luge are zip lining and bungy.

Cheers,

There is a new treetops walk near Hokitika, which sounds amazing although quite expensive (but required some pretty innovative engineerring to build).
