Unique Wellington restaurant

Any suggestions for a unique Wellington restaurant? Not looking for just a nice/fancy place but somewhere representative of the area/local cuisine and such. Thanks!

My favourites, which I'd say represent Wellington are Capitol (http://capitolrestaurant.co.nz), The Crab Shack (http://www.crabshack.co.nz) and Beach Babylon (http://beachbabylon.co.nz/). All fantastic and highly recommended.

I don't know that a "unique" restaurant in NZ actually exists unless you perhaps go to a hangi shop. We have a great number of top restaurants that are rated amongst the best in NZ. Logan Brown and Matterhorn are but two. "Hippopotamus" is highly rated on the Trip Advisor best restaurants but it has never rated that highly when judged by the professionals.

I also don't know what local cuisine is. Twenty or thirty years ago it was possible to be a bit more definitive but we are now a cosmopolitan city with a plethora of styles and different cuisines.

If one wants a typical dining experience of NZ in days gone by then try the Green Parrot in Taranaki Street.

Recent visitors from US thought Backbencher in Thorndon, Wellington was a great experience. Not sure about the food but the cliental and political satire make it worth a visit.

I would only go to the Backbencher for a drink, and eat somewhere else.

Logan Brown is more up-market, although they have an early evening bistro menu that is less expensive. If you do decide to splurge a little, there are some New Zealand items on the menu, most notably the paua raviolo (paua is the local variety of abalone).

Another possibility is Karaka Cafe by Frank Kitts lagoon, which incorporates New Zealand native herbs and local ingredients into several dishes.

For a place that tries to create a distinctive kiwi ambience and cuisine, Arthur's on Cuba (272 Cuba Street) is worth looking at. Modern NZ food seems to involve a casual cafe culture - on Cuba Street alone, there are several good representatives: Olive, Floriditas, Plum, Cuba Street Bistro.

Arbitrageur gets good press for its so-called casual dining but not sure how unique you would find it. Hippopotamus also good. For things representative of local cuisine, typical Kiwi fare, there are a few suggestions on this Wellington Pub and Grub page.

Also you might like to wander down to the daytime food courts of Jervois Quay where you can find all manner of specialities.
