Wineries around Wellington?

I'm going to be on a business trip to Wellington in June and would like to take a day off and visit some wineries. Does anyone know if there is a wine area which is an easy drive from Wellington and any reccomendations for wineries to visit? What type of wine can I expect in this area and is the harvest already finished?

Thanks in advance.

You're in luck - the world famous (in New Zealand) Martinborough wine area is only about an hour drive's away from Wellington. Lots of relatively small high quality vineyards. IThere is about three dozen within a five kilometre radius that have gate sales with most offering wine tastings and several providing food and accommodation).

Very good white wine (sav blanc and charonnays) and pinot noir..

A great day trip - very popular with us Wellingtonians. Bit of a hill in the middle but no problems.

The harvest will be over by now but I haven't seen any in the shops yet.

Definately go to MArtiborough. It is SO nice. It is a pity you can have a night here too. Martinborough is a very boutique little town. All the wineries are unique in that there are plenty to visit on foot, otherwise you can drive around and there are many to choose from. Places like Murdoch James estate and Margrain vineyard also do lunch onsite which is aways good.

My personal favourites are -Martinborough Vineyard-ThePinot Noir is just always exceptional. (a few doors down is also a micro brewery if you like that kinda thing)

Ata Rangi- Also superb wine

Alana Estate- Great (This is the wine fortnum and mason buy and put their label on!)

Dry River (Although expensive and by appointment only)

Vynfields.-An amazing house like Twelves Oaks in Scarlett O'Hara. The had to ship the house over from wellington in 7 pieces! You can get a flight of all their wines at about $15nzd (£5) and they have a roaring fire inside in winter, a gazebo and outdoor terrace overlooking the vineyard in summer...and two beautiful fluffy cats on site! Also you can get platters of food, smoked salmon, Fresh wild boar pates, warm bread etc there.

Te-Kairanga is popular too with people. There are so many to chose from!

Just google these places and you can see they are all lovely...You can walk to the above mentioned...Make sure you do go! It is georgeous.
