I recently arranged for a tour of Tauranga, Rotorua and environs for my parents (active seniors) as one of their port of call treats while on a cruise. My mother is vision impaired and would not have benefited as much from a large organised group tour, so we were after something more ‘one-on-one’ and personal. Using TripAdvisor and the advice of knowledgeable locals, I was recommended to try ‘Indigenous Trails’. These people specialise in a number of different styles of tours in a wide area of New Zealand (not just Tauranga). When I contacted Des Harris, he couldn’t be more helpful, welcoming or friendly. He and his staff gave my parents a most memorable day that they will cherish.
They were met at the wharf by their guide, Mere, whose knowledge of the area, it’s history and it’s people was vast, and always shared in an entertaining and informative way. They visited a Kiwi fruit farm, Rotorua, and a Maori village at the hot springs. They also visited a particularly beautiful hidden valley family trust garden, Gideon’s Fields, (which was magnificent!) where they were welcomed by a Maori chief who gave them a traditional Maori blessing. This hospitality and respect made them feel very welcome and special. Mary even took them to a local surf club when they needed some toilet facilities! This day also included a big tasty lunch that they enjoyed with the larger tour group that ‘Indigenous Trails’ had that day.
My parents were treated like royalty and were made to feel very, very special. This company truly understands and practices the Maori traditions of Manakitanga (hospitality) and Aroha (love) for elders. This tour was the highlight of their holiday in New Zealand – we highly recommend ‘Indigenous Trails’.
