10/11 days in New Zealand

Hi, we are travelling to New Zealand in February 2015, we have 10/11 days maybe a day or so more. I would like to go to Rotorua and Bay of Islands but have been looking and everywhere looks amazing. We will be flying into Auckland we would also like to travel to Wellington taking a ferry to the South Island for a couple of days.

Can anyone advise on where are the best places to stay and visit please?

Hi Tracy's C, welcome to the Kiwi forums.

With limited time available, and the wish to see parts of the North Island and well as the South, you could do a series of 2 loop tours with a flight in between.

For the North Island, arrive Auckland to explore on your first full day. Drive to Paihia for 1 night, before returning south. May require a night either just north of Auckland (Hibiscus coast) or outskirts Auckland towards Hamilton.

You could visit the Waitomo Caves before driving to Taupo for 1 night, followed by Rotorua for 1/2 nights. Either drop your rental in Rotorua city to fly south to Wellington, or Nelson. Alternatively fly from Auckland airport.

From Wellington take the ferry to Picton and hire a car to Christchurch via Kaikoura, and perhaps a day-trip to Akaroa if flying back to Auckland for departure. Or if flying into Nelson you could visit Tasman Bay, followed by Marlborough Sounds and Blenheim wineries before taking the ferry across to Wellington for several nights. Wellington to Auckland has frequent domestic air services, with seats often available on Air NZ's Grabaseat at reasonable fares.

Is Aucklanbd airport also your NZ departure point?

I think your wish list is too long for the time available. How do you plan to travel?

Option 1.

1. Arr AK;

2/3. Coach to BoI; cruise

4. Return to AKL; fly to Wellington

5. Explore

6. Ferry to Picton; collect rental car; drive to Nelson

7. Explore Abel Tasman NP

8. Drive south to Punakaiki

9. Drive through Arthurs Pass to Christchurch

10. Fly back to AKL

11. Fly home

Or you could add a full day in AKL as day 2, if you could arrange a connecting flight CHC-AKL-home on day

Option 2.

1. Arr AKL; relax

2. Explore AKL

3. Drive or coach to BoI

4. Cruise; drive south towards AKL

5. Continue south to Rotorua (Hobbiton?); stay 2N

6. Explore

7. Long drive to Wellington

8. Ferry to Picton

9. Hike Queen Charlotte Track/kayak etc; evening ferry back to Wellington

10. Explore WLG

11. Fly to AKL & home

With such a short time frame you will loose a lot of time if you travel between the islands. IMHO you will make the best use of your time if you limit your visit to just one island.

We went in April this year and a few things really stood out for us. Cathedral cove is amazing and when you arrive at night, the surprise of it the next morning is incredible. Get up early and go down to the beach- one of the best ways to spend a morning.

When we went to Rotorua we went and did the skyline luge. Was so much more fun than we thought it would be and we got to be big kids for the day. Whilst in Rotorua you should definitely go rafting down the 7m waterfall. Don't go to a big company though. We found a guy at Rotorua Rafting in a holiday park

It is quite hard to find but we rolled up without booking and the guy, Pete, found the time to take us out. It was cheaper than the others and it was just the two of us and the guide. It was great fun and well worth doing and really not as cold as you think it will be!

We went for a similar length of time and didn't even make it down as far as Wellington. I agree that you should dedicate the time to one island and find some excuse to go back and do the other one like we are.

We spent alot of time driving and that was a shame. there is so much to do and it is a great place. We went to the glow worm caves which are incredible but then we took a detour and went to the Otorohanga Kiwi house. this was a highlight of the trip as we got to see Kiwi's for real and it is such a hidden little gem. Well worth a visit.

Hope you have a great time. We went to so many other places if you want more recommendations! We can't wait to go back!
