Waitamo Caves to Taupo to Rotorua

We are arriving July 4th 7AM in AKL and plan on driving the 5th to Waitamo and continuing to Taupo for a night and Roturua for a night before taking a 9AM flight to Queenstown. I thought staying a night Taupa would save time for the drive up the next night. I am looking for a perfect day in each area. One suggestion was to do a 5 1/2 combined river & orakei korako visit on the first day being that it is just north of Taupo. If this advisable than what would be a good Rotura visit. Would I be better off just staying in Roturua for the 2 nights rather than unpack and drive down? Thanks

Your plans to visit Waitomo, Taupo then Rotorua would work out just fine.

It is 2 hours from Waitomo to Taupo, or if you drive the scenic route from Waitomo down to National Park via Te Kuiti and back up to Taupo you will get to see the size of Lake Taupo from the south end of the lake, and the stunning scenery of Tongariro National Park. It will take longer but it is a great drive around the foot of the mountains. Stay the night in Taupo www.laketauponz.com or for a B&B www.taupoaccommodations.com

It is an hour from Taupo To Rotorua.

Visit Orakei Korako on your way to Rotorua. The jet boat ride into the hidden valley of Orakei Korako is a must do.www.riverjet.co.nz

You will be in Rotorua by 2pm.
