Suggested 1 week loop.

Our flight arrives in Auckland at 2.45 on the 9th January. we plan to spend about a week driving around Rotorua(we spent a few "tourist"y days there years ago) and the Bay of Plenty before heading to Waiheke Island for a week.

We plan to hire a car and take it to Waiheke.

What are some lovely places to explore and/or stay in our first week? We love walking, lakes, beaches, kayaking etc.

Where could we stay the night before leaving so that we can get to the car ferry terminal???? some time in the morning?

Thanks so much.

We did the glowworm kayak tour that Waimarino does from Tauranga and enjoyed it very much. We also did the short hike along Okere Falls and were lucky enough to have our timing right with the photographer for the rafting adventure. We got some great photos of the rafters tumbling over the falls. I also loved Kerosene Creek, but understand it can be hit or miss. Further south, we hiked to the top of Rainbow Mountain. It was a bit strenuous, but the views were spectacular.

Further north, the Windows Walk in Karangahake Gorge was awesome! And a nice little winery was located across the street for tasting.

Hi,

For your car-ferry trip across to Waiheke, there are a couple of motel-apartment style places at Half Moon Bay very close to the ferry terminal. Several cafes in this lovely beach-side locality also.

Alternatives outside the area include motels and motor-inns at Ellerslie, or in Manukau CBD. Both would be approximately 15 - 20 minutes away from the ferry terminal, using the motorway system or main thoroughfare to Pakuranga (Half Moon Bay area). Except if it's peak rush hour in the morning the journey from these places may take longer. Waipuna Lodge in nearby Panmure would be another good option.

www.wotif.com is a great site for checking indicative accommodation prices, and for making secure bookings too.

All the best.

Thanks so much deSchenke for your walks and suggestions. We also loved the natural Kerosene Creek experience many years ago and hope to go again.

Also,Frangipani, I'll check out Half Moon Bay and your other recommendations.
